Los Omnibuses : Buses in MontevideoGetting around Montevideo is pretty easy, and no doubt the cheapest and most convenient way to do it is with the wide variety of public buses. There are a number of bus companies operating (eg CUTSCSA, UCOT, COETC, COME) but they all use the same bus stops and in general charge the same fee and operate in the same way. The cost is usually 14pesos (about 60cents) for a normal ticket (called "comun") with this ticket you can go as many stops as you like from start to finish. However if you are traveling in downtown and only going a few stops you can request a "zonal" ticket which is only 7 pesos. The difficulties with using the buses is that many streets in Montevideo are one-way and so the buses often take one route on the way there and a different route when returning...to avoid any confusion I HIGHLY recommend buying the "Eureka Guia de Montevideo". This is a pocket sized book listing all the bus numbers & their routes, it shows detailed street maps of Montevideo and also gives an index of all street names. This book is available is most book stores, I bought mine in Mosca. Another 'caveat' when taking the bus in Montevideo is that there are often no numbers on the bus stops...in fact sometimes there are no bus stops! In this way the bus guide is very helpful as it shows where on each street the bus will stop. To hail the bus you must clearly put out your hand - the bus WILL NOT automatically stop if you do not do this as they will assume you are waiting for a different bus. When you board the bus you will either pay the driver (carry small change as they won't accept larger notes) or there will be a "cashier" sitting in a chair on the left. When you buy your ticket you should move down the aisle as you are expected to board the bus through the front door and leave through the back door (sometimes pushing through the crowd can be quite challenging so its best to simply sit or stand near the back door). There is a button (either above the back door or attached to the pole beside the back door) that you need to press in order to let the driver know you wish to exit at the next stop. |
