customs and taboos

What are the taboos in Uruguay? I haven't the slightest clue as to what may be considered as one among these South Americans.

A common American thing to greet others on the street is frowned on in big cities in Uruguay. I am not sure why, but it is the same in other nations as well. Maybe due to political events. Also for another reason which I have no idea, giving the thumbs up is a huge insult to an Uruguayan, so it is better not to ever show that sign in public.
